In this post we will be talking about making your own geofilter for Snapchat. Geofilters have become very popular and you can actually make your own.
Fischwerks Design has decided to give guidance on how to make your own geofilter. The way geofilters work are that it is a predesigned graphic that is then uploaded to Snapchat Inc. where, if the design is approved, you can set a specific location for that geofilter. For example, many of you have probably seen the Rocky Mountain geofilter if you are from Utah. If not I am sure you have seen plenty wherever you are from. But today we are going to give our own little redesign on a Rocky Mountain geofilter.
The first step is to brainstorm and come up with an idea for your design. For the Rocky Mountain Region I felt that I needed to include the mountains in my design. You should consider keeping the design relatively simple as it should not take up too much of the screen. From there you need to draw out your mountains in your graphic design software of choice.
The second step to make your own geofilter is to put detail into your design. Figure out what kind of shading you want or if you want to make it just a simple outline. You can add in different textures as well to give dimension to your design. For my design I decided to give a background texture and add some light shading to the top of my mountains.
The third step is to decide on the orientation of your design. You can put your design almost anywhere but there are a few things you should consider. First, do you want your reader to be able to see past your design into a picture? The way Snapchat works is to take your own photo and add on the geofilter afterwards. If you want the reader to be able to have their picture in the background then you need to offset the design. For mine I moved it to the bottom right.
The fourth and final step is to add any text that you think would complete your design. Again, just like with the placement of the design itself, you need to think of the placement of the text. I decided to place the text vertically on the left side. This allows the user to still have plenty of space to have their own photo. Now all you have to do is go get your geofilter approved by Snapchat Inc. and you can show off your design to everyone around you.
